Why Introduce Homeschool Kids to Salvation Mountain?

Aug 11, 2025

In my previous post, I shared some background about my ditching society in 2024 and running away to Slab City, California, known as the last free place. While living full time in Slab City, I got the honor of working part-time as a docent, or greeter and tour guide at Salvation Mountain.

Here I am on my shift working as a docent, or greeter, at Salvation Mountain.

Working at Salvation Mountain was a welcome break from my online independent educator work. It was a welcome change from teaching in a classroom. Salvation Mountain gave me the opportunity to truly live and experience life fully by meeting the world of humanity from every country and every continent...in person!

In case you didn't see that email, or, didn't have time to read it...

What in the world is Salvation Mountain?

Salvation Mountain is a giant painted mountain reinforced with adobe created by outsider, or, self-taught artist, Leonard Knight (1931 - 2014). It's located in Southern California, Slab City. There is other incredible art Leonard created on site including his giant Sea of Galilee, art vehicles and his Balloon Museum.

Although Leonard Knight was a born again Christian, his message on his mountain was for both believers and non-believers. I don't know how he managed it, but, his message meets people right where they are at. To be clear and honest about my own beliefs, I left all organized religion back in 2008.

Why?

I was frankly sick and tired of the patriarchy, power and control over my life. I feel more free then I've ever been in my life by leaving it all behind. What do I believe now? I'm merely a spiritual being having a spiritual experience that I'm comfortable not labeling. I believe that our spiritual journey is our own, not to be dictated by other humans using a book as a weapon of power and control.

Are you with me still?

We don't have to agree about spirituality. But, if you stick around, you'll see that Salvation Mountain is for EVERYONE, not just for Bible believing Christians.

It's time that we stop using different worldviews to divide us and come to a place of common ground and unity. Our country and the direction we're going depends on We the People unifying and having our voices still heard.

Most of you reading this are homeschoolers. Most of you chose to homeschool because you were tired of someone else dictating to your family the what, where, how and when they were learning. You and your family get to call all the shots now. You're in complete control of your lives.

Why Salvation Mountain?

It's common ground where all of humanity meets in unity right where we are no matter what we believe or don't believe. The main message Leonard wanted the world to know is simply this:

God is Love.

The second most important message to Leonard that he shared on the Mountain, I'll share with you tomorrow.

Here's a fun little video short that I created showing more of the wonder and magic of Salvation Mountain I had the privilege of experiencing.
