Leonard had only intended to stay in Slab City, CA long enough, about a week, to inflate his giant hot air balloon and get it into the air. He wanted everyone to see his hot air balloon in the air with his special message of God is Love and his version of the Sinner's Prayer.
Here's Leonard's handmade wooden cart of which he hauled his giant hot air balloon in.
After the hot air balloon failed to float, it rotted away in the desert. Leonard never gave up. He went to work building his message into the side of a giant hill. He reinforced his artwork with adobe, or, clay from the hillside itself mixed with water and straw. Next, he painted over the adobe mountain with multiple layers of donated household paint of all colors of the rainbow.
Leonard ended up spending 28 years creating the mountain that visitors named, Salvation Mountain. He used the last of his physical strength to create Salvation Mountain, which still stands today. Today thousands of visitors come from all around the world to visit Salvation Mountain.
How is Salvation Mountain today? It's currently maintained by Salvation Mountain Inc. 501(c)(3), a non-profit Leonard set up made up of 9 dedicated board members. It's located in the Sonoran desert of Southern California in a far flung place called Slab City, California.
