I went home feeling like an utter math failure. But, I did something very unusual that weekend.
That Saturday morning, I awoke early before my single mother got up. Instead of watching my usual Saturday morning cartoons, I assembled some art materials. I grabbed a pair of scissors, paper, tape and some crayons. I began cutting out little pieces of paper and taping them together into three tiny booklets.

I was in my zone of creativity and put together my very first unit study without knowing what one was...
While visiting my grandparents, I had been introduced to ocean life through Jacques Cousteau's tv series and books. By watching the Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, I was inspired to create these super fun math booklets illustrated with marine life.
Without adult prompting or supervision, I combined the dryness of the same math problems I had failed in school with the marine life I had seen on TV and in books. I became engrossed, inspired and enthralled to do math.

I Created My First Marine Biology Unit Study at 8 Years Old:
To this day, I marvel that without any adult prompting, guidance or supervision, I had unschooled myself and created my very first Marine Biology unit study. It included adorable marine life art hand-drawn by me.

Without realizing it, I had included various subjects, undivided, in my three tiny marine life themed math booklets.
I had included marine life images in their natural habitat (science), writing, and math. All of it flowed so naturally for me. I even made sure to preserve the wee booklets in a tiny plastic sheath.

What was worse, I continued to be disinterested in my schoolwork, least of all my math homework...
As a young girl, school was robbing me of my natural inclination to learn while seated in a classroom. I continued to fail math during the early grades. How sad, indeed!

Fast forward to 2003. It was my 7th year as a private school elementary teacher...
I was burned out and exhausted leading a multi-grade classroom of 3rd - 5th graders in a tiny private school of 30 students in Newark, DE. I couldn’t see my way out of the endless days of grading, testing, using boring curriculum, and asking the same students to please stop talking and interrupting me for what felt like the millionth time.

I knew that something was missing and I needed to change how we learned Science.
I was feeling stuck in a rut regarding our learning. Science classes felt dull. When I had been in college, I re-discovered my natural inclination for deep-diving a subject through unit studies. But, I had not yet had the opportunity to really try to do them while I was teaching grades 3 - 5.

Then, one day, just when I thought I couldn’t take it anymore in a traditional classroom...
Our principal, Mr. Major, told us in a staff meeting that we would spend the year doing Marine Biology for science. This endeavor became very exciting to me! Teaching a full year of Marine Biology would allow my students and I the time and freedom to deep-dive into the subject. I was given full permission to research and design our Marine Biology unit as I pleased. Thus, NatureGlo's Marine Biology full year unit study course was born.

I Went on to Pilot the First Yearlong Marine Biology Course with my Elementary Students.
2000 was a very exciting year for my students as I. I began deeply researching marine biology and assembling the unit study. We even went to a nautical museum to celebrate our learning, of which we all loved.

Fast forward to 2010 when I lost my last job at a private school.
After losing my last job in a private school, I went on to recreate Marine Biology to become the digital online course that it is today. In 2013, I hit the road as a solo female full-time van lifer. I taught Marine Biology along with several other natural history courses to homeschool students online from the comfort of my van.
In 2013, I won my freedom and took off across the country in a 2001 Ford E350 van dubbed EverGreen Queen. During 2013 - 2019, I taught all of my online courses live to homeschoolers from the back of my van, including Marine Biology.
