Gloria A. Brooks: Progressive Alternative Educator Portfolio

Teacher-naturalist since 1997 and a digital nomad since 2013. After teaching for 14 years in private schools, I transitioned to teaching in-person and online alternative, progressive MathArt and natural science courses to homeschool students.

My homeschool teaching journey began with my 1-year innovative unschool nature-based program called Heathcote Art & Science Center (HASC) based in Freeland, MD where I was a residential community member at Heathcote Intentional Community. Before I began HASC, I had the privilege to join an Open Classroom apprenticeship, which,  helped me deschool and learn to run an unschool program.

NeS Online Courses

I began NeS by offering an array of online natural science and real life math (MathArt) courses inspiring my students to experience nature outdoors and connect natural world studies across the curriculum.

MathArt

In 2003, through the teachings of Don Tolman, I became enamored by the connections there are with math and nature, especially Euclidean geometry and fractal geometry found in the natural world. I went on a 7-year research, study and photographic journey looking at patterns in nature and making connections with math across the core subjects. After multiple revisions, I fine-tuned my MathArt course into four 6-week lessons that can be extended and used throughout an entire 9-month school year.

An Innovative Online Math and Science Interactive Course Experience For Kids 8 and up.

Experiential Natural Sciences with Student Self-directed Learning

After teaching in private school for many years, I found out through trial and error that children need to be liberated from the confines of a curriculum, get out from behind the computer or textbook and experience learning integrated with the natural world. Both in person and online, I offer a "buffet" of child self-directed learning experiences through creating "virtual libraries" per lesson.

Art Combined with History and Math

Students are given ample time and opportunities to create original artwork inspired by connections with math and history.

What Our Homeschool Parents Say:

Happy customers are everything and we strive to achieve the best results

Homeschool testimonial

"Our children love Ms. Brooks’ classes. They love logging in to participate in real time and they took great pride in creating and making live online presentations to their classmates. Further, on the occasions we were unable to accommodate the live class schedule, our children did not feel left out since they were able to catch up by watching the recordings. I continue to recommend Ms. Brook’s classes without reservations, and will seek opportunities to integrate them in our future learning journeys." -Sandra G.

Homeschool parent testimonial

"Gloria has been an absolute delight for my kids! They have taken several classes and loved the online interaction with both Gloria and other children from all over the world. Since there is no official 'homework,' my kids feel free to explore the topics for fun. When something of interest takes hold, they have the liberty and enthusiasm to design their own creative projects."
