How To Homeschool Middle School Science Without Curriculum

Jul 02, 2022

Walking Away From Traditional Science Education Demands Into The Land Of Inspirational Science Learning FREEDOM

What if you could feel fine and even relaxed about dropping the traditional science textbooks in your homeschool? No guilt. It can be just you and your family simply using richly illustrated yet scholarly science library books, or online science virtual library eBooks.

I can show you step-by-step now on how to liberate your homeschool science.

What would it look like to relieve your family from burdensome, unwanted science curriculum?

See it. Feel it.

Finally, experience the full freedom, joy, and right to learn science their way with your natural born, innately curious kiddos.

All. For. Free.

Imagine these are your kids (or kid) celebrating science learning liberation free and unfettered from daunting textbooks!

Dropping the textbooks is precisely what I did for my multi-age homeschoolers from 2010 - 2011, when I facilitated Heathcote Art & Science Center (HASC), a nature-based in-person homeschool program for multi-age kids.

Wow, I haven't bothered to use any textbooks since 2010 when I last taught at the Elijah School!

The scope and sequence for my online courses are for:

  1. MathArt - history of mathematics, starting with ancient history and right up to modern day times.

  2. Science - all the beautiful groups of plants and animals, called "orders", so that kids can see all of them from a "bird's eye view" and home in and focus on what they're most curious learning about.

From your children's favorite science topics, you can pull out the math, science, reading, writing, art, history, geography, and science experiments. This is the beauty of unit study style learning.

Here my HASC students and I learn about patterns in nature found in fruits and veggies.

Rather than follow rigid, surface learning science textbooks with someone else's agenda, someone else's learning slant (need I remind you...written too many times by people who've never taught kids a day in their life), NatureGlo's eScience simply offers kids a "bird's eye" view of the various plant and animal groups in my online courses. Once kids get an in-depth view of all the different plants and animals, they're offered a plethora of self-directed project opportunities.

What I coach my homeschool parents to do is to foster their family's science learning curiosity with high quality "living" science books such as DK's (Dorling Kindersley) science encyclopedia's (they have published a TON of them over the last several decades) and Usborne's and Janice VanCleave's science experiment books.

Two of the most visual science encyclopedias: (from left to right) DK Science Encyclopedia and Usborne's Science Encyclopedia.

Three great science experiment books: (from left to right) Janice VanCleave's Big Book of Science Experiments, DK 101 Great Science Experiments by Neil Ardley, and Janice VanCleave's 201 Awesome, Magical, Bizarre, & Incredible Experiments.

Using JUST science encyclopedias and science experiment books could be your entire science "non-curriculum" fueling your child's utmost curiosity with plenty of hands-on experiential learning opportunities through experiments.

Why Homeschool Parents Are Afraid To Stray From Science Textbooks

Many parents are afraid to veer too far away from science textbooks, especially as their kids reach middle school. And once their kids reach high school, the hysteria pressures increase and parents become even LESS likely to allow their high schoolers to strictly follow their child's science interests away from textbooks.

But, why? Let's unpack this a bit.

There are two major reasons:

1 - Societal pressures.

2 - Our own education indoctrination.

These include the pressures around college and adult preparedness, of course. There's always that powerful nagging voice telling mamas and papas that they're never doing enough.

What are some voices heard in our adult heads around preparing our kids the closer they get to leaving the nest?

"My child doesn't have time for self interests in science. They must buckle down and be ready for passing those exams for college in just a few short years. They better knuckle down, buckle down, and start studying that Periodic Table in their textbook right now!" These parents say within themselves breathlessly with a bit of sweat over their upper lip.

Or,

"Science is so hard. I don't know what I'm doing. I don't know how to teach it. Our family MUST rely on science textbook to make sure the kids aren't missing anything."

Or,

"My family is always nosing into our homeschool business asking my kids what they know and if they're keeping up with the other kids in public school. I can't take the pressure of this anymore! We don't have time to explore science for fun and we must get through these science textbooks this year so that I can show my family that my kids are doing just fine!"

These are just some of the most common nagging voices in our homeschool parents heads.

What if you could just follow YOUR children's lead in science after all?

Did you know that there's a growing army of parents and their kids who are so sick and tired, fed up, frankly, with failing government run education, failed standardization of education, and are choosing to march to their own beat and the beat of their child's learning rhythms IN SCIENCE AND MATH TOO? Well, there is and you can join in too!

Math is the language of science and so much of math can be learned as children deep-dive into the sciences

Right inside of just about ANY science topic your child could hold interest in, there lies the math buried like beautiful, hidden treasure waiting to be discovered and USED! Therein lies everything from basic math, Pre-algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, to Calculus and beyond.

I first fell in love with math at the age of 24, AFTER I had finished all of my schooling. Why not inspire kids to love math early on by showing them connections there are with math found everywhere in the world around us?

It's not until years later when adults FINALLY enter their field of science that they begin to see how the maths relate to the world around them.

Huh? Why aren't we introducing the math WITH the sciences early on with children?

Because society as a herd is dumber than an ox and teaches to the test instead. There's just not enough time for real life connections between math and its science if we're too busy trying to race through the gauntlet of our latest curriculum fad to notice the real world math connections everywhere around us.

What can we do? We can quit hyper focusing on dry computation and learn to really "see" the beauty and wonder of math found in the world all around us starting with your kiddo's latest science interests and passions.

Motivation is the fuel for learning! If your child is motivated to learn a certain science topic, take keen notice of it, and fuel it with rich living books, resources, and experiential learning opportunities through experiments.
