10 Spring Homeschool Unit Studies for Multi-ages
Here are 10 terrific spring themed unit studies to run with this spring. There are some free and some paid unit studies.
#1 - Patterns in Nature Unit Study
Above image: Cracked earth I found along my hike one morning.
Spring is a spectacular time to look for patterns in nature. My favorite is to begin by looking for the early spring wildflowers right in my yard.
Add in some wildflower sketching fun in a blank journal. Throw in some colored pencils and you've got an art, science and math connection of beauty! Start looking for the very early spring wildflowers called, "spring ephemerals" such as crocuses and spring beauties.
After a rain, observe an area of dirt as it dries up in the sun. Return to it and you'll most likely come across the cracked earth or fractal pattern. Fractals are a self-similar repeating pattern that resembles veins or a branching pattern.
Here's my Patterns in Nature Backyard Treasure Hunt Template set to give you a jumpstart exploring nature's patterns this spring.
#2 - Bugs Unit Study
Do you have a child that seems to be obsessed with bugs? Do they like to capture them in jars and look at them? This spring explore insects starting in your own backyard. Get a bug field guide of your area from your local library. Have the kiddos look up the various bugs they find. Photograph, sketch and color them in your journals.
Here's my free Unit Study planner that can help you plan out your next bugs unit study.
Feel free to make multiple copies of it and do various insects including butterflies, bees, ants, etc. Whatever tickles your kiddos fancies, make a separate unit study template for it. Get out supporting library books for the study.
#3 - Sea Turtles Unit Study
Spring is a superb time to study the lives and life cycles of any or all of the 7 sea turtle species. If you're on the east coast, the sea turtle nesting season is from March - October. Kids love and adore sea turtles. There are so many rich literature experiences

Trees get overlooked as far as unit studies are concerned. Why not begin exploring trees starting right in your own backyard and then moving out to your local neighborhood and local park. There are so many cool math and art connections with trees. There's counting the rings from a cross-section of a tree. There's doing leaf and bark rubbings. There are oodles of tree storybooks to help whet your kiddos appetites to want to learn about them. Hug a tree today and create a fun trees learning journey with your kiddos starting with great books followed by taking a backyard walk around looking at the tree friends you already have around your home!
A great journaling exercise is watching as the trees in your backyard begin to grow leaves again in the spring. Take a photo of a favorite tree every week and watch the progression as the tree goes from bare to leafed.
